Whether developing interiors for individuals, corporates or institutions, we service clients operating in a wide range of sectors across the continent and beyond.

Our services include

Research and programming

After developing a design brief and conducting preliminary site visits, we undertake research to define and analyse your users’ needs. Thereafter, a formal programme is developed to determine the appropriate spatial relationships, circulation patterns and design requirements that can fulfill the user criteria, while maintaining regulatory and financial feasibility.

Concept development

Once the programming has been approved, we develop a preliminary look-and-feel presentation, comprising hand-drawn visualisations, references and initial floor plans, alongside mood boards of fabric swatches and material samples. This phase allows us to define the visual language that will be applied throughout the final design solution.

Design and detailing

We develop the full interior design scheme, including final floor plans, supplemented by 3D models and renders where necessary. During this phase, detailed drawings of site-specific interior-architectural features are finalised, and any custom-designed products are briefed into development.

Documentation

We produce a final set of drawings, including floor, sectional and elevation plans, alongside construction documentation that assists with the installation of services, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and sprinkler systems. A detailed specifications document, as well as a schedule of finishes, is submitted to contractors in order to procure final bids for the construction phase.

Costing collation and contractor management

Working in tandem with your appointed project manager, we collate and evaluate trade tenders, and assist in the appointment of contractors and co-ordination of a schedule of works. We perform quality control on materials and furnishings placed on order, and perform regular site visits to inspect progress and resolve any on-site issues as they arise. Any custom-designed furniture enters the manufacturing phase.

Evaluation and handover

Prior to taking occupation, the client joins us for a full site walk-through, in order to inspect the final finishes and compile a list of snags. Working alongside the appointed project manager, we make any final adjustments or revisions that may be necessary to take the project to completion.

B.Arch Interior Design (Luca-Arts, Ghent)

+ Biography

Belgian-born interior designer Timothy Vandenbroeke received his B.Arch Interior Design degree at the esteemed Flemish design school, Luca-Arts, in Ghent before relocating to South Africa over a decade ago. Having cut his professional teeth in the local architectural and interior design industry for six years, he went on to establish Laterale as his solo studio practice in 2014. By combining his classical European training with his extensive experience operating within the unique and complex constraints of the South African economic climate, Timothy brings a unique perspective and nuanced approach to his craft that immediately sets Laterale’s portfolio apart. With an expert understanding of materials and extreme attention to detail in execution, Timothy’s work blurs the boundaries of design, artistry and investment.
